I. WARM UP (5 minutes)
* Game: “Slow reveal”
school, cinema, home, beach
+Objectives: To help the students review the
vocabulary about places.
+ Procedures
- Tell students how the game is played.
- Prepare the pictures about places.
- Put a picture on the board and cover it with a
piece of paper.
- Very slowly move the paper to reveal the
picture, little by little.
- Ask “What's this?”. Ask students to guess
the place, e.g. school
- The first student to guess correctly comes to
the front to choose the next picture.
- Continue the game until all of the words from
the vocabulary set are said.
- Tell students what they will learn in this
lesson.
II. PRESENTEATION (8 minutes)

+ Objectives: To help the students understand
and correctly repeat the sentences in two
communicative contexts focusing on asking and

Bill asking Mai where she was
Bill: Hi, Mai. I didn't see you at the campsite
yesterday. Where were you?
Mai: I was at home. My cousins came to
visit.
- Context b:
Bill asking Mai where her family were and
what they did
Bill: Were all your family at home?
Mai: Yes, we were. We listened to music and
cooked lunch together.
- Ask students to look at Pictures a and b and
identify the characters.
 Who are they?
 Where was Mai?
 Where were Mai's family?
 Guess what they are talking about

correct use of the sentence patterns to ask and
answer questions about where someone was in
the past in a freer context.
+ Procedures
- Picture cues: two boys at a funfair; many
children at a theatre; two girls at a campsite;
some children at an aquarium
Speech bubbles:
Were you at the ... yesterday? - ....
- Draw students' attention to the picture in
Activity 3. Ask questions to help them identify
the contexts.
 What can you see in the picture?
- Elicit the missing words in the speech bubbles
and write them on the board. Get students to
say the completed sentences.

Game: “Pass the teddy bears”
- Tell students how the game is played. Give an
example.
- Give two different colored teddy bears to two
students, a black teddy bear (ask the question)
and a white teddy bear (answer the question).
- Ask students to listen to music and pass the
teddy bears.
- Stop music suddenly.
- Have the student with a black teddy bear
make a question. Have the student with a white
teddy bear answer the question.
e.g. Student A: Were you at the theatre
yesterday?
Student B: No, I wasn't.
- Praise students if they play the game well.

STUDENTS' ACTIVITIES
- Practise asking and answering questions about
where someone was in the past in front of the
class.

- Listen to the teacher's instructions.
- Prepare for it at home by making a survey
about where one or two of the classmates were
and what activities he / she / they did there.
- Bring the surveys to class to present them at
Project time in Lesson 3, Period 6.

* Game: “Missing flashcard”
theatre, aquarium, campsite, funfair
+ Objectives: To help the students review the
vocabulary about places.
+ Procedures
- Explain how to play the game.
- Divide the class into two groups.
- Place four flashcards (theatre, aquarium,
campsite, funfair) on the board.
- Have students play the game in turns. Have
students close their eyes. Teacher removes one
picture.
- Invite one student from each group to speak
out the picture which disappears.
- Continue the game until all the vocabulary
sets are said.
- The group with more points wins the game.
- Tell students what they will learn in this
lesson.
II. ACTIVITY 1 (8 minutes)
* Listen and tick or cross. (Track 88)
+ Objectives: To help the students listen to and
understand four communicative contexts in
which characters ask and answer questions
about where someone was in the past.
+ Procedures
- Ask students to look at the pictures and
identify the characters and the places.
 How many pictures are there?
 What can you see in each picture?
- Play the recording for students to listen all the
way through.
- Play the recording again for students to tick or
cross the pictures.
- Get students to swap their books with a
partner and then check answers as a class. Write
the correct answers on the board.
- Play the recording the third for the students to
double-check their answers.
- Extension: If time allows, play the recording,
sentence by sentence, for the class to listen to
and repeat the dialogues. Correct their
pronunciation if necessary.
- Praise students if they do the exercise well.

- Do Exchange 1 together as an example. Have
students read the exchange. Draw their
attention to the first gap in the question and
explain that the gap refers to the place Linh and
her friend(s) were last weekend. Let them look
at the picture and identify the place (funfair).
Then have students look at the answer and
identify that the answer should be we were.
Give students time to complete the gaps with
funfair and we were.
- Give students time to do the rest of the task
independently. Go around the classroom to
offer help where necessary.
- Get students to swap books with a partner and
check their answers before checking as a class.
- Invite a few pairs to act out the completed
exchanges in front of the class. Correct their
pronunciation where necessary.
- Praise students if they do the exercise well.

have learnt in Lesson 1. Explain how the game
is played (in Input). Check comprehension.
- Invite two groups (three students each) to the
front of the class. Have them listen to the topic
(At the campsite). The first member of the first
group (a girl) tells the place where she and her
friends were yesterday (e.g. We were at the
campsite yesterday.) The second member (a
boy) listens to the girl, repeats the information
about the place where she and her friends were
yesterday (e.g. They were at the campsite
yesterday.) The third member (a girl) repeats
the boy's information and adds in the place she
and her friends were yesterday (e.g. They were
at the campsite yesterday. We were at the
campsite, too). Check comprehension.
- Divide the class in groups of three. Set a time
limit for students to play the game. The group
members discuss and decide the order of the
speakers in the group. The game ends when all
group members have done their roles. The
group that says the most sentences in the
shortest time will win the game.
- Praise the winner.
* FUN CORNER AND WRAP-UP (5

Game: “A happy circle”
- Write the question and answer on the board.
- Explain that they are going to make a circle,
then ask and answer the questions about where
someone was in the past.
- Put students in group of six.
- Model the game. Have two students of each
group make question and answer about where
someone was in the past.
e.g. Student A: Is your sports day in May?
Student B: No, it isn't. It's in March.
- Have the class play the game.
- Invite one or two groups to perform in the
front of the class. Praise students to encourage
their performance.

TEACHER'S ACTIVITIES

answering questions about activities someone
did in the past in front of the class and correct
their pronunciation where necessary.
- Give encouragement to the students'
performance.
* FUN CORNER AND WRAP-UP (5
minutes)
Game: “Secret boxes”
- Ask students if they remember the previous
sentence structures to ask and answer questions
about where someone was in the past.
- Write the question and answers on the board.
- Divide the class into two groups. Have a
student from each group play one, two, three to
find the group going first.
- Have two students from each group choose a
box, then look at the picture given and ask and
answer questions about where someone was in
the past.
- Ask the class to check their friends'
pronunciation. If they ask and answer the
questions correctly, they will get points from
the boxes for their groups.
- Continue the game until all the pictures are
asked and answered.
- The group with more points wins the game.
Praise the winner.

STUDENTS' ACTIVITIES
- Practise asking and answering questions about
activities someone did in the past in front of the
class.

- Give the sentence structures about where
someone was in the past.
- Look at the question and answers on the
board.
- Work in two groups. Play one, two, three to
find the group going first.
- Choose a box, then look at the picture given
and ask and answer the question about where
someone was in the past.
- Check their friends' pronunciation.

- Continue playing the game.
- Praise the winner.
